Couples Therapy / Marriage Counselling

For married couples, de facto partners, & couples preparing for marriage.

Even the strongest relationships can face moments of disconnection, tension, or uncertainty. Life changes, cultural differences, communication challenges, or emotional wounds can make it difficult to feel close and understood. Couples therapy offers a warm, respectful space where both partners can begin to make sense of their relationship dynamics and work toward rebuilding trust, connection, and shared purpose.

We support couples at every stage of their relationship journey, including:

  • Dating or de facto couples

  • Engaged or pre-marital partners

  • Married couples

  • Those navigating separation, co-parenting, or relational repair

Our practice has a particular focus on cross-cultural relationships, where different languages, traditions, and family expectations may shape how partners experience and express love, conflict, and decision-making. We approach these dynamics with deep cultural respect and help couples find meaningful ways to honour both their differences and their shared values.

Couples often come to us seeking support for:

  • Feeling emotionally distant or disconnected

  • Frequent misunderstandings or conflict

  • Recovery from infidelity or breaches of trust

  • Navigating cultural or intergenerational expectations

  • Preparing for marriage or significant life transitions

  • Rebuilding the relationship after separation or hardship

We draw on a range of evidence-based and relationship-focused frameworks to support each couple’s unique needs:

  • For couples in distress or at risk, we use a combination of traditional psychological interventions and the Gottman Method to help reduce conflict, improve emotional responsiveness, and foster respectful communication.

  • PREPARE/ENRICH is offered to couples preparing for marriage, helping them explore values, communication patterns, and relationship goals in a structured and meaningful way.

Session Structure and Fees

We understand that every couple’s story is different. That’s why we begin with an initial session focused on understanding your relationship, exploring concerns, and setting shared goals. This assessment session helps lay the foundation for meaningful and tailored therapeutic work.

  • Standard couples session (50–60 minutes): $200

  • Extended session (90 minutes): $250

  • Split billing between partners is available upon request.

Please note: Medicare rebates do not cover couples counselling. Private fees apply.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1.   Do both partners need to attend the first session?

Yes. Couples therapy is most effective when both partners attend together from the beginning. The first session focuses on understanding the relationship history, current concerns, and shared goals. In some cases, your psychologist may suggest individual sessions later in the process if therapeutically appropriate.

2.     What if my partner is reluctant to come to therapy?

It’s common for one partner to feel unsure or hesitant about starting couples therapy. We encourage open conversations about what you hope to gain from therapy and the importance of working together as a team. Sometimes, attending an initial session together can help both partners better understand the process and its potential benefits.

3.   Why is the initial assessment important?

The initial session is more than just an introduction—it's a chance for us to gain a clear understanding of your relationship’s history, strengths, and current concerns. It also allows both partners to express their perspectives in a safe, supported way. This helps us tailor the therapy process to your unique needs and ensures that future sessions are focused, goal-oriented, and meaningful. Starting with a thoughtful assessment sets the foundation for effective and lasting change.

4.     Can you help with pre-marital counselling?

Yes. We offer PREPARE/ENRICH pre-marital counselling for couples preparing to take the next step in their relationship. This typically involves 2 to 3 sessions focused on communication, values, expectations, and strengthening your relationship foundation.

5.   Is couples counselling covered by Medicare?

No. Unfortunately, couples counselling is not eligible for Medicare rebates. It is offered as a private service, with fees of $200 for a 50–60 minute session or $250 for a 90-minute session.

6.     How many sessions will we need?

This varies based on each couple's situation and goals.

  • Pre-marital counselling usually requires 2 to 3 sessions.

  • Couples experiencing distress or long-standing issues often need a longer-term commitment to see meaningful results. We’ll work with you to create a plan that aligns with your needs and priorities.

7.   Do you see culturally diverse or mixed-culture couples?

Absolutely. We specialise in working with  and families. We understand the unique challenges that can arise from cultural, linguistic, and generational differences, and we approach these with deep respect and cultural awareness. Sessions are available in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Support is available whether you're preparing for marriage, hoping to reconnect, or working through a difficult season in your relationship.
