Mental Health First Aid Training Perth
Knowing how to respond when someone is experiencing a mental health problem can make an important difference.
Bilingual Psychology provides Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training in Perth for individuals, workplaces and organisations seeking practical skills to recognise signs of mental health challenges, provide initial support and encourage appropriate professional help.
Training is delivered by Lin Tan, an accredited Mental Health First Aid Instructor and registered psychologist.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid teaches practical skills for providing initial support to someone who may be developing or experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
Just as physical first aid equips people to provide initial assistance before professional medical treatment is available, MHFA helps participants understand how to approach and support someone experiencing mental health difficulties.
The training is designed to improve mental health literacy, increase confidence in having supportive conversations and help participants understand when and how to encourage professional support.
It does not train participants to become therapists or mental health professionals.
As an accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Instructor, I deliver evidence-based training designed to equip individuals and workplaces with the knowledge and skills to recognise, respond to, and support people experiencing mental health challenges.
Training options available:
-
Standard MHFA (2-day course) – Face-to-face delivery
-
Blended MHFA for the Workplace – Online learning combined with a facilitated session
-
Standard MHFA Refresher (4-hour course) – Face-to-face delivery for those renewing their certification
Participants who complete the full training are eligible to complete an assessment to become Certified Mental Health First Aiders, who are recognised for a period of 3 years.
The Refresher course is designed for those whose accreditation is due for renewal and who wish to maintain their certification and skills for another three years.
These courses are ideal for promoting psychological safety, reducing stigma, and building confidence in providing early support to someone in distress.

Mental Health First Aid for Workplaces
Managers and colleagues are often among the first people to notice changes in someone's behaviour, performance or wellbeing.
However, recognising that something may be wrong doesn't necessarily mean knowing what to say or do next.
Workplace MHFA training can help participants develop greater confidence around mental health conversations while understanding the importance of boundaries and referral to appropriate professional support.
For organisations, training can form part of a broader commitment to mental health literacy, psychological safety and supportive workplace culture.
Become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider
The Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course is a nationally accredited training program.

Adults aged 18 years and over.
The conversations you have may save lives – You can make a difference!
Mental Health Professional vs Mental Health First Aider
A Mental Health First Aider is different from a mental health professional.
Psychologists and other appropriately qualified mental health professionals provide assessment and/or treatment within their professional scope.
Mental Health First Aiders provide initial support. They learn how to recognise potential mental health concerns, approach someone appropriately and encourage professional or other suitable support where needed.
Understanding this distinction is an important part of responsible Mental Health First Aid.
Private Group & Workplace Training
Private MHFA training can be arranged for workplaces and organisations with eligible group sizes.
Training can be useful for organisations seeking to strengthen mental health literacy across teams or provide managers and employees with practical skills for responding to mental health concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?
Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training course that teaches participants how to recognise the signs of common mental health conditions, provide initial support, and guide individuals to appropriate professional help.
Do I need mental health experience to attend?
No. MHFA is designed for members of the community, and prior professional mental health training is not required.
Does MHFA make me a mental health professional?
No. Completing Mental Health First Aid training does not make someone a psychologist, counsellor or other mental health professional. The course teaches initial support skills rather than diagnosis or psychological treatment.
Can workplaces arrange private MHFA training?
Yes. Private group training may be arranged for eligible workplaces and organisations. Contact Bilingual Psychology to discuss your requirements.
Who is the training suitable for?
The course is designed for adults aged 18 and over from all walks of life. It is especially useful for individuals in leadership, HR, frontline, community-facing, or caregiving roles — but no prior mental health knowledge is required.

Not at all. While participants have the option to complete an online accreditation assessment to become a Certified Mental Health First Aider, this is not compulsory.
Those who complete the Standard MHFA course but choose not to undertake the assessment will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

Yes. Upon completing the full Standard MHFA course, participants will receive either:
-
A Certificate of Completion, or

A Certificate of Accreditation (if the online assessment is completed successfully).
